Why We Must End Gay Conversion Therapy Practices
The practice of gay conversion therapy has been a constant source of ire in the LGBT community for several years. It looks like the fight against gay conversion therapy is gaining steam. LGBTQ Nation reported that the Seattle City Council will soon pass a city-wide ban on the destructive and damaging practice. Seattle will join several other cities, including Washington, DC and Cincinnati, in putting a stop to this destructive “therapy”.
Lorena Gonzales, the Seattle Council member who sponsored the ordinance, eloquently stated the reasoning behind opposing the controversial practice: “Instead of providing [children] the support that they need, there are people out there who believe it’s appropriate to convince [them] that their same-sex orientation is somehow a disease, or an illness, or something that can be cured.”
Sexual orientation and gender identity are natural variations of humankind. #LGBTrights Click To Tweet
Her arguments echo the sentiment of the Human Rights Campaign, which has battled gay conversion therapy for years. The practice claims to change a patient’s sexual orientation or gender identity. However, the practice is notoriously ineffective. Major medical organizations and mental health groups refute any claims the destructive practice works. This includes the American Psychological Association and the American Medical Association who describe the practice as unproductive and harmful.
In fact, gay conversion practices are likely to create mental trauma and identity disorders. Still, the practice has its share of supporters within religious groups and politics. So, unfortunately, conversion therapies and camps continue to flourish. Therefore, they continue to spread misinformation and inflict trauma on children at a time when they need support and understanding.
Fighting Gay Conversion Therapy in Courts
The long fight against damaging gay conversion therapy has already seen several victories in court. In both 2013 and 2016, U.S. courts upheld state-level laws banning the practice. A 2016 consumer fraud complaint was filed against one of the corporations behind the practice, People Can Change. The case used extensive research conducted by the American Psychological Association to attest that the company’s advertisements are based on lies, misinformation, and fraudulent claims.Dangerous and discredited, gay conversion practices should be outlawed. #HumanRights Click To Tweet
In several states, gay conversion therapy is already outlawed. California, Oregon, Illinois, and New Jersey all maintain statewide bans on the practice. Seattle’s efforts to join the fight underscore the importance of states and municipalities fighting to protect LGBT youth from these harmful procedures. We can only hope that more states and cities make their voices heard when it comes to protecting young members of the LGBT community in the coming years. If the fight continues gaining support, we might even hope to see the practice banned across the country in the near future.
