DNC Beams with LGBT Pride with Brian Sims
This week, the Democratic National Convention is the biggest story in politics. Hillary Clinton’s supporters have gathered in the Philadelphia to officially nominate the former Secretary of State for the upcoming presidential election. Leaders and delegates will also outline the party’s goals and objectives moving forward. For LGBT voters and delegates, equal rights and representation are a big part of the party’s platform. The DNC LGBT Pride was certainly evident as the convention kicked off.
Brian Sims, one of the nation’s most visible and vocal gay lawmakers, was front and center at a welcoming party and several other events for LGBT delegates, supporters, and allies in the city for the Convention. The Philadelphia representative, has quickly amassed an impressive record of supporting equal rights measures and combatting opposition to LGBT rights. Sims promoted the DNC’s efforts to welcome, support, and protect LGBT citizens.
We are going to see national leaders from around the country come here and talk about why LGBT rights are American rights, are civil rights, are human rights. –Brian Sims
According to ABC News, LGBT visibility and equality were front and center on the eve of the Convention, with Sims stating, “We are going to see national leaders from around the country come here and talk about why LGBT rights are American rights, are civil rights, are human rights.” Sims has an impressive record of success pushing federal lawmakers toward supporting LGBT equality, and his voice is an important one in the party when it comes to pro-LGBT efforts.
Gay Dem Rep Brian Sims Slams Anti-LGBT GOP Platform
For Sims and the rest of the Democratic Party, the Convention presents an opportunity to further distinguish the party and its platform from the Republican ticket. In a recently-published op-ed in Philadelphia Magazine, Sims came out against Republican vice-presidential nominee Mike Pence, whose “religious freedom” bill allowed businesses to discriminate against LGBT customers and cost Indiana’s economy an estimated $60 million.
In the op-ed, Sims frankly addressed the stakes for LGBT voters.
LGBT individuals are facing discrimination every day. It is the president’s job to bring us together — not tear our country apart. We cannot support a candidate for president that encourages this tolerance for hatred. –Rep Brian Sims
At the Democratic Convention, Sims and his fellow lawmakers, along with party leaders and members of the public, have the opportunity to turn those words into action. Hopefully, the Democratic platform will continue pushing for LGBT rights and build on recent successes while working to solve many of the pressing issues facing the community.
“I want to live in a nation that is creating jobs,” Sims said before the Convention. “A nation that is protecting me and respecting me.” It’s a simple wish, and hopefully the next few days will contribute to making it a reality.
